What's In Your Bible?

…for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name. – Psalms 138:2

John Wycliffe

John Wycliffe was the first person to put the Bible into English in 1382.

It was translated from the Latin Vulgate not the Greek and Hebrew.

Roman Catholic church services were in Latin as was the Bible.

Everyone spoke English so common man couldn’t be the Noble Berean and verify what was being taught or read.

There were no checks and balances as to whether what was being preached was in the Bible.

It was illegal to read or memorize scripture in any language other than Latin.

To do so, was under penalty of death.

Wycliffe’s Bibles were handwritten since the printing press had not yet been invented.

It took 8-10 months to complete one copy.

Wycliffe’s followers were called Lollards. They would take a Bible to a town square and simply read it.

No preaching, no exegesis, no explanation, they just simply read the words from the Bible.

People came from everywhere to hear the word of God for the first time in their own language.

Many Lollards were put in jail and or burned at the stake for reading the Bible in English to common man.

They were considered heretics.

While John Wycliffe died of a stroke at Christmas in his church, the Roman Catholic church was so mad at Wycliffe and how his Bible was changing the world,  that after he was dead and buried for 44 years, the pope issued 3 Papal bulls to dig up his remains and burn his bones along with all of his writings.

This was finally directed by the Council of Constance

After digging up his remains and burning them to ash, they threw Wycliffe’s ashes in the river swift.

Wycliffe’s ashes were thrown in the River Swift which empties into the River Avon, which went into the River Severn, which empties into the Bristol Channel which empties into the Atlantic Ocean which goes all around the world.

This is rather picturesque in that the English Bible also made its way from England to around the world.

John Wycliffe did this so you could read and understand the Bible in your language and stand for what’s right.
