What's In Your Bible?

…for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name. – Psalms 138:2

Did Jesus claim to be God?

Exodus 3:13-14

And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? 14And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

Frequently Asked Questions

For this specific topic

It’s actually MORE specific by using the very unique phrase “I AM”, attributed specifically by God Himself to Himself.

General

Yes.  Yes it does.

Additional Documentation

Muslims are posting all over Social Media that Jesus never said that He is God.

It’s one thing to proclaim to be God, it’s quite another to do God things.

I am that I am.  Kind of weird eh? I am that I am?

A rather distinctive way to answer it. God says “say unto the children of Israel I AM hath sent me unto you.”

Sounds like a code word eh? Pssst Hey bud, “Tell them I AM sent you”

Only those “in the know” would know how to interpret it.

Anybody else would say “I am what?”

So we know from this story that God is I AM.

Now let’s say a few thousand years go by and then somebody comes along and says:

John 8:58-59 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

Did he just say I AM?

As in God saying I AM when He spoke to Moses?

If Jesus just said I AM, that means He was the one talking to Moses.

And if He was the one talking to Moses, that makes Jesus God.

If that were true, wouldn’t there be a sign or something that would indicate that the Jews understood what Jesus claimed?

Verse 59 Then took they up stones to cast at him:

They picked up stones to cast at him.

They knew that Jesus was claiming to be God.

Isn’t this better than Jesus saying I am God? I mean, he did miracles, raised people from the dead, caused the blind to see and used the same language that He used a few words earlier.

If it was clear enough for the Jews, it should be clear enough for Muslims, and us as believers.

So, if someone askes you where in the Bible does Jesus say that He is God, tell them that you will do something better, I’ll show you where Jesus speaks as God. Take them first to Exodus 3:14-15 to establish that God is the Great I AM.

Make sure they understand and admit that God is I AM.

After they see and understand that, then take them to John 8:59-60.

Once they see that, take them to Matthew 9:2 or (Mark 2:1-12; Luke 5:17-26)

And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. 3And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth. 4And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? 5For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? 6But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. 7And he arose, and departed to his house. 8But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men.

Jesus doesn’t just tell us that He is God, or the Son of God, He shows us and does Godlike things. It’s one thing to proclaim something, and then it’s a completely different thing to do it.
