Who Is E. M. Bounds?
Edward McKendree Bounds was a Methodist minister and author who is considered one of the most important writers on the subject of prayer in Christian history. Born in Shelby County, Missouri, he practiced law before entering the ministry and served as a chaplain in the Confederate Army during the Civil War.
After the war, Bounds pastored churches across the South and eventually settled in Washington, Georgia, where he spent the final 17 years of his life in almost constant prayer and writing about prayer — often rising at 4 AM to pray for hours before dawn.
Most of his books were published posthumously by his friend Claude Chilton, who recognized the extraordinary depth of Bounds' insights into the prayer life. His writings on prayer remain among the most influential in Christian history, continuing to challenge and inspire believers more than a century after his death.
He spent the last 17 years of his life devoted to prayer — rising at 4 AM daily for hours of communion with God. His life was his message.
