Standards Matter
What’s In Your Bible: Standards matter!
My father and brother were working on a wood project. Dad would tell my brother what size board he needed, and my brother would cut it.
Dad said he needed a 27 and ¼ “ board.
My brother cut it and it was 27 and 3/8s
Dad said take off an 1/8th.
My brother cut off the 1/8th, thinking Dad mismeasured and Dad assumed my brother miscut it.
Dad asked for another board to be cut and again it was 1/8th of an inch off.
Tensions started to mount where Dad was thinking my brother was being sloppy or didn’t know how to measure
My brother was frustrated because he knows he cut it correct but Dad was not measuring it right.
Finally, Dad put his measuring tape on the board and said, Look, it’s 27 and 3/8ths.
My brother pulled his tape measure out and it measured to 27 and ¼.
Come to find out, they were both using different measuring tapes and between the two of them, they were 1/8th of an inch off.
The Standard they were using were different.
They both assumed the measuring tapes were the same, but they weren’t.
They had to establish what the standard was going to be and both use the same tool.
