When Did Wise Men See Jesus pt 2
What’s in your Bible: How old was Jesus when the Wise men arrived. Part 2
Matthew 2:9 lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.
Now naysayers will proclaim “they saw the young child” proves Jesus wasn’t a newborn.
They say that the Greek word paidion for Young Child proves it was years later.
First of all, a newborn is a young child
let’s look at the word used for infant when Joseph and Mary for His circumcision 8 days later
And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS. Luke 2:21
Paidion, same word 8 days old.
Now let’s look at what word is used when they took Jesus to the Temple to offer the sin/cleansing sacrifice 40 days after being born.
Luke 2:27 “And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law
Is a 40 day old still a newborn, infant, or baby?
It’s still the same word paidion.
So, Why 40 days old at the Temple in Jerusalem?
Mothers of newborns are considered unclean for males at 40 days and 80 days for females.
Joseph and Mary would have brought baby Jesus to the temple at the 40 day mark to honor the law.
She was considered unclean until then.
Brephos is a Greek word for Baby. Some say this proves Jesus was not a baby when the wise men visited because they didn’t use the word Brephos.
We’ve already shown how this is a false argument unless you think that an 8 or 40 day old isn’t a baby.
Just because there’s a word for baby in Greek, doesn’t mean it’s the only word.
Just like in English, different Greek words can have the same meaning and are interchangeable.
Baby, infant, young child, newborn, can all be the same thing.
What year do you think Jesus was born?
